Who has time to try Pilates, ballet, yoga AND tai chi? (We know we don’t!)
So why not try a workout that combines elements of them all?
Madonna, Bjork and Julianne Moore are said to be sold on the Gyrotonic ® system of fluid and spherical movements, which is being used for fitness training as well as rehabilitation in hospitals, chiropractic offices and physical therapy practices.
Similar to Pilates in its combination of floor exercises, Gyrotonic® — which was created by Hungarian dancer Juliu Horvath in the ’80s — includes moves that are performed on a giant, medieval-looking machine. Unlike Pilates, it develops flexibility while lengthening and stretching the spine versus focusing on core strength and yogic breathing.
But be warned …
Count on at least 5 to 10 sessions of private instruction (average cost is $50 to $100 per class) before you can move on to group sessions. Not inexpensive!
So if you’re looking to combine several types of exercise into one (and don’t mind spending the extra bucks), this popular trend — with nearly 1,300 studios worldwide [ find one] — may be just what the fitness guru ordered.
