As temperatures and leaves change, so do the allergens. Follow VJD acupuncturist Aimee Raupp’s tips for an eastern approach to unrelenting sniffles.
Plan ahead. Ideally, begin acupuncture 1-2 months prior to allergy season to boost the lung (believed to be the body’s first line of defense). If you’re already suffering, acupuncture offers relief without the unwanted side effects often associated with western medications.
Experience wanted. Look for a practitioner who has treated allergies before, and recommends dietary changes (no phlegm-y foods like refined sugar and dairy) along with regular use of a neti pot (rinses out the nasal cavity with salted water).
Ask herb. Herbs like Astragalus and Atractylodes will help boost the immune system prior to allergy season. To deal with an existing attack, more aggressive herbs are recommended based on your particular needs. In general, Coptis, Isatis root and Loquat are effective at killing an infection. But always ask your acupuncturist/herbalist for specific directions before taking.
