Daily bit top

/The shoperone effect/ n: Nowadays, it seems every supermarket item has a story, with stores using displays and brochures to help you make better food choices (they don’t know you read VJD!). While sometimes helpful, these grocery guidelines—aka the shoperone effect—can be guilt-inducing … it’s ok if you still don’t like alfalfa sprouts!

Daily bit bottom

Halloween is particularly scary for anyone with children’s health in mind. This year, forget stickers and opt for nutritious treats—no tricks required.

With the help of Caren Tishfield, RD, co-founder of Mindful Menus, we’re getting kids interested in healthier snacks, without the risk of getting egged:

“Healthy cookies” sounds like an oxymoron, but all-natural and organic varieties like Barbara’s Bakery Snackimals cookies or 100-calorie mini-cookie bags are both wholesome and a big hit with trick or treaters.

Candy bar alternatives like no-junk Clif Z Bars are also a smart pick, says Tishfield. Aside from being yummy, “the protein and fiber make an excellent combination for snacks.” Try to stay away from bars containing nuts, which can be a big allergy-trigger for kids.

Naturally-sweetened fruit treats, like R.W. Knudsen’s juice boxes, are an easy way to satisfy kids’ sweet tooth and give them a boost of vitamin C. Stretch Island’s Fruit Leathers amount to a half-serving of fruit, so feel free to dig into the leftovers!
