Daily bit top

/Shiroabhyanganasya/ (sheer´o-ah´bee-yang-ah-nah´zee-ah) n: An ancient Ayurvedic treatment that uses herbal oils, deep massage and steam to soothe the head, face, neck and shoulders. Helpful for clearing sinuses, this mouthful is also known to relieve insomnia, stress and migraines ... that is, unless you're trying to pronounce it.

As temperatures drop, take out orders rise. We asked Joanne “Dr. Jo” Lichten, author of Dining Lean, to help us “take out” some of the fat and calories, and steer us to healthy Chinese food choices. Her picks include:

Moo Goo Gai Pan: This stir-fry chicken dish includes mushrooms and other veggies. It usually contains white meat instead of higher-fat dark meat, and the dish is served with a light sauce made from chicken broth.

Chop Suey: It’s similar to Chow Mein, minus the fried noodles. Many varieties of Chop Suey exist, but all are a combination of meat, vegetables and white sauce. Choose lean meat—like shrimp—and request extra veggies for a fiber boost.

Soup and Dumplings: Skip the oversized portions and try making a meal from appetizers. Start with a low-calorie broth-based soup like Hot & Sour Soup, and pair it with steamed (not fried) dumplings.

For a healthier meal, request “No MSG” and ask the chef to use low sodium soy sauce. Even better: order your dish steamed.
