Daily bit top

/Quinoa/ n: Pronounced KEEN-wa, this should-be kitchen staple has peeked many a curiosity among our readers. A “super-grain” that’s technically a seed, quinoa looks like tiny clear couscous and makes a low-GI (Glycemic Index), protein-rich replacement for pasta, rice, soy or even cereal. Its light nutty flavor and fluffy texture make it delicious in a variety of dishes, including VJD’s recipe for Italian Quinoa.

Alcohol and sugary mixers mean your holiday drinks may be loaded with more than just festive flavor. In fact, 2 glasses of rum punch can add up to 700 calories! Fortunately, Registered Dietician Marissa Lippert shared her best suggestions for guilt-free holiday spirits:

Wine Spritzer: Instead of a glass of wine—which can total 100 calories—mix red, rose or white wine with seltzer to cut the calories in half. (Added bonus: you’re also cutting your chances for a hangover the next morning.)

Champagne: This bubbly holiday favorite is usually about 78 calories per serving, making it one of the lowest calorie drinks. Add a few fresh cranberries or strawberries to make this special beverage even more festive.

Vodka and Club Soda: If you prefer mixed drinks, opt for vodka and club soda. It’s about 100 calories, which is significantly less than a vodka-tonic (190 calories) or vodka-cranberry (250 calories), advises Lippert.

Killer post! and one that supports the proposition I made on Fox 5 during the holidays. It also sparked a fond (kind of) memory which I posted about on my fitness website www.trainerdirect.com

Thanks for the suggestions they are great. As a fit drinker and a professional fitness trainer (thank god not a professional drinker) I couldn’t agree more.
