We take 25,000 breaths a day, but hardly ever stop to think about our breathing until faced with a panic attack.
Samuel Kirschner, founder of Living in the Present, practices “mindful meditation,” which focuses on accessing peace and calm in the moment. Follow his tips on how even the busiest bodies can slow down and make each breath count:
Start by developing an awareness of your breath. By paying attention to your breathing, you’ll immediately shift focus to the present moment and move out of your head. (See, it worked!)
Practice core breathing daily. As you breathe in, push your stomach out; as you breathe out, pull your belly in. (Counter intuitive to our “crunch” culture—but it works!)
Next, sense your body and its movements. Notice your thoughts and emotions, accept them rather than fighting them. (Relax!)
Read inspiring material like Eckhart Tolle’s latest, “A New Earth,” which illustrates how mindful mediation is a philosophy, not a zombie state.
The results of surrendering mental tumult to your breathing: a calmer, healthier and happier you.
