It’s normal to lose about 50—100 hair strands per day—but any more could indicate hormonal imbalances or nutritional deficiencies. According to Alisa Vitti, founder of the Laughing Sage Wellness Group, here’s how to get to the root of your problem:
Get diagnosed. You need to rule out an underlying health issue, such as a thyroid condition, polycistic ovary disease, anemia or an autoimmune disorder.
Examine what you eat. Low protein diets and detoxes can wreak havoc on your hair even 2 – 3 months later. Restore proper balance and eat foods high in biotin—a B vitamin essential for hair health—like green peas, brown rice, lentils, oats and walnuts.
Maybe it’s your meds? Certain prescription drugs that treat depression/anxiety and blood pressure, or even birth control pills may cause temporary hair shedding. Ask your doctor.
Tress Stress. Whether you’ve recently been under a lot of stress or tend to always be tense, both can trigger hair loss. Learning how to manage stress could be the key to getting back your luxurious locks (start by taking a deep breath).
