You binged on the backyard BBQ and now you’re paying the price: heartburn from hell. Skip the Mylanta, Tums and suffering—instead, eat a diet aimed at reducing stomach acid and reflux. Dr. Gerard E. Mullin, Director of Integrative GI Nutrition Services at Johns Hopkins, recommends the following:
Just say no…to chocolate, caffeine, peppermint, spicy, fried and fatty foods, tomatoes, citrus juices and yes, those fruity cocktails by the pool side (alcohol is a no-no). Order that virgin Pina Colada and you might feel better.
Take soothing sips. Chamomile tea (even on ice) facilitates the healing of the inflamed mucous membranes in the esophagus. Drink at least 2 cups a day. Ginger tea helps with digestion — drink after a meal.
Chew gum. Any flavor besides mint will do. It increases the production of saliva, which neutralizes stomach acids.
Eat fruits and nuts. Bananas and almonds have been found to reduce inflammation in the intestines; enzymes found in papaya aid digestion.
The right root: Chewable or powdered deglycyrrhizinated licorice root has a soothing, coating effect; it protects the esophagus and the stomach and reduces inflammation.
